![]() The smoother laying down of the graphite was exceptional and you can actually see and hear this in my video review. In general I love the Derwent Graphite pencils, they feel incredibly good in the hand, well weighted and balanced, their hexagonal shape lends well to those using a tilted drawing board. On my YouTube video review, I review the Hard Graphic set, however, I also have the 24 set and to me, the 8B and 9B, give off a really nice rich dark, it may not be the very darkest, but Derwent have taken this a stage further with their beautiful Onyx range, which I will be reviewing at a later date. Graphite artists, are always looking for a nice dark B pencil and one that does not give off a shine when the light hits it. Every single pencil in the Derwent Graphic range has been rated 8 for lightfastness, the highest in the scale. With the Derwent Pencil Company using the Blue Wool scale, graded 8-0, with 8 the highest lightfast scale. The first thing that has to be said about the Derwent graphite pencils is the new Made in Britain stamp now emblazoned on every pencil and of course the new rebranded packaging for all of Derwent's products.īelieve it or not, lightfastness is a factor with graphite pencils as well, this refers to the graphite not fading in sunlight over a period of time. As always, I feel it is important to note that despite my love for the Derwent Pencil Company and their products, when it comes to reviewing any products, my love takes a back seat and my critical eye takes front and centre. If my memory serves me well, I purchased a set of the Derwent Academy graphite pencils first, which are aimed at the student and school grade market, however, it wasn't long before I discovered the silky smooth Derwent Graphic Graphite pencils. Living so close to the beautiful town of Keswick in the Lake District, home to the wonderful Derwent Pencil Company, Derwent Graphite pencils were in large supply. I don’t know about you, but the next time I use a pencil, I’m going to be just a little more impressed with its shiny graphite tip.I think it is a fair assumption to make that I, like so many artists, before selecting my medium of choice, coloured pencil, I started out with graphite. ![]() From golf clubs to nuclear reactors to taking notes in space, graphite is hard at work in the world. Graphite’s sister, the diamond, may be more sparkly and expensive, but graphite is still an extremely versatile and valuable material. Fishing rods, golf clubs, bicycle frames, sports car body panels, pool cues, and even the fuselage of the Boeing 787 air crafts are just a few places where you can find graphite at work. Graphite is used in carbon-reinforced plastics, out of which many common products are made. On its own, graphite is an all-star, but it also makes a handy supporting player. Because of this, graphite can be used to control the speed of the nuclear fission reaction that takes place in nuclear reactors. Graphite possesses the unique ability to absorb fast-moving neutrons. In my personal opinion, one of the most impressive uses for graphite is in nuclear reactors. Jerry Alonzy, the Natural Handyman, also points out that a pencil can be used to complete an electrical circuit in a pinch. It is therefore often used in batteries and to make electrodes. Graphite is also an excellent conductor of electricity. Crucibles are containers used in the production of metal, glass, and pigment and must be able to withstand extremely high temperatures. Graphite has no melting point at atmospheric pressure, is a good conductor of heat, and is resistant to many chemicals, which makes it an ideal material for crucibles. If you’re a scientifically-minded person, the properties of graphite will be of interest. This makes it a perfect dry lubricant for machine parts and metal locks. If you’ve ever had a pencil tip break and roll away, and if you’ve ever tried to pick it up, you have an idea of how slippery graphite is. The pencil is of course the most common and well-known use for graphite, but there are some unique properties of graphite that make it useful for a number of different applications. When you hear the word graphite, pencils inevitably come to mind.
